{Digital Photography}

 I purchased a Nikon Coolpix 5000...now it has all of the 'bells and whistles' (more than I thought I would ever need), BUT, that has been all the fun in owning this camera.  With reference manual in tote, I have learned how to take better photos in special lighting, close up, with a wide angle, black and white, and more! (see examples) And talk about convenient!  I take the photos that I want and run up to my local drug store, or Sam's Club, and enhance how I want, get the size I want, and only choose the copies that I want.  Then, in about an hour, I have beautiful photographs to take home and scrap!

Here are some helpful tips, including how/where to print photos, how to enhance, definition of digital photography terms, reviews of the best cameras, and other helpful resources.

Megapixel
Megapixel, which means one million pixels, is a unit of measurement for resolution of digital cameras. The more pixels (or tiny dots), the better the picture quality. While pictures from a 3-megapixel camera can be printed up to 11 x 14-inches, a 2-megapixel camera makes 8 x 10-inch prints, which are fine for most people.

Resolution (or Picture Quality)
The number of pixels (or tiny dots) that make up an image. Resolution is measured in megapixels. The higher the number, the better the picture quality and the bigger the print you can make. Pictures taken with a 3-megapixel camera can be printed up to 11 x 14-inch prints, while pictures from a 2-megapixel camera can be printed up to 8 x 10 inches.

A beautiful, quality  photo is important in creating beautiful, quality scrapbook pages.  Try not to use photos that are blurry, too dark or light, etc... An off-center photo can be easily corrected with the help of cropping.  You can do this either when you have your photos printed, or by using a paper trimmer later when you are creating your page.

Do not print photos on your regular computer printer, as they do not work the same way as a thermal photo printer does (like a Kodak Picture Maker Kiosk or  that you can purchase for home-Sony Picture Station Digital Photo Printer icon ) The regular prints do not last.  Where the thermal printer photos will last forever.

Use a backdrop for portraits, I use a black felt material and it works great.  I also just use a thick white sheet for a white backdrop.  Here is an example of what I mean:

Here are a few  of the top digital cameras.  Check each one for the review it has been given.

bulletYou will want to purchase a memory card or memory stick -Lexar 128MB SmartMedia icon (depending on type of camera purchased) approx $48.00 for 128MB (which is what I use), a memory card reader PNY USB Multi-Slot Digital Card Reader icon (quickly view photos on your computer), approx $24,   an extra battery and fast charger (batteries fizzle quick on these cameras, especially when you are trying to teach yourself things) approx $30...and a camera case -approx $10.  At first it was hard to purchase all at once, BUT, let me just tell you, I use each and every one of these things just about all of the time.
Consider a photo editing program, such as, Microsoft Digital Image Suite
which runs about $20, or less.  Or you can purchase a more advanced program, such as, Microsoft Digital Image Pro 9 North America for about the same price.

I have Picture It software, but for photos that I want to print for scrapbooking, I usually edit them when I am at the Kodak Picture Maker/digital photo Kiosk...
